Laptop Care: Best Practices

1. Keep It Clean

  • Regularly wipe the screen and keyboard with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Avoid eating or drinking near your laptop to prevent spills and crumbs.
  • Use stickers on the laptop’s case instead of the device itself.

2. Handle with Care

  • Middle and high school students should bring their laptop to school daily (Kelley School students will leave theirs in their classroom).
  • Always transport the laptop in its protective case using both hands to prevent drops.

3. Charge Responsibly

  • Charge overnight to ensure readiness for school.
  • Leave the charger at home to reduce loss risk.
  • Use only the provided charger; IT will replace one charger per device lifetime.

4. Store Safely

  • Never leave laptops unattended in school common areas.
  • During vacations or breaks, store laptops securely.
  • Avoid exposing the laptop to extreme temperatures (e.g., leaving it in a hot car).

Responsible Use: Expectations

1. Stay Focused

  • Use laptops exclusively for school-related work during class.
  • Close unnecessary tabs and apps to minimize distractions.

2. Be Respectful

  • Follow staff requests to close tabs, apps, or the laptop itself.
  • Adhere to the Newark Central School District’s Acceptable Use Policy.

3. Be Responsible

  • Treat the laptop as you would valuable personal property—it is district-owned.
  • Return the laptop, case, and charger if you leave the district or change schools—your device access will end when your account is disabled.
  • Do not lend your device to others.

4. Stay Secure

  • Keep login credentials private; do not share them.
  • Report any suspicious activity to a teacher immediately.
  • Avoid installing unauthorized software or tampering with settings.

5. Ask for Help

  • Lost or stolen laptops must be reported to a teacher immediately—our recovery software can assist.
  • For technical issues, visit the Kelley School greeter or the middle/high school library; accidental damage is covered under warranty.
  • If you need help using a feature or troubleshooting, ask a teacher.

Liability & Warranty

  • The Newark Central School District reserves the right to seek reimbursement for lost, intentionally damaged, or unreturned laptops. A replacement device—including case and warranty—is valued at approximately $775 (as of August 2024).
