Perkins and Lincoln School students, staff and parents through four collection efforts have helped to make this holiday season a bit brighter for some area children and families.
• Kindergarten through second graders at Perkins School and Lincoln School, in collaboration with staff, parents and students, together collected nonperishable food items, hats, mittens and scarves for the Newark Food Closet.
Newark Food Closet co-chairs Lisa Barrett and Becky Jandreau came to the school December 22nd to collect items that were arranged around a Christmas tree decorated with donated hats, mittens and the scarves.
Kindergarten teacher Beth James once again this year organized the drive at Perkins.
“Perkins collected 420 food items and 156 hats and mittens. This is double what we usually have. Also, our staff donated $80 to give to the food closet,” she said.
At Lincoln School, Elaine Erb, Kindergarten Grade Level Leader who teaches math Academic Intervention Services at the school, reported 107 hats, mittens and scarves were donated by students and staff there.
“Thanks to everyone who donated. You have helped to bring warmth to people in our Newark community,” Erb said.
• The winter wear items collection at Lincoln School coincided with a non-perishable
“Sharing Is Caring” food drive at the school organized by UPK teacher Stephanie Joyce.
Barrett and Jandreau were very appreciative, as in the past, of the donations from both schools.
The Food Closet is open from 10-noon Monday through Fridays and the third Saturday of each month from 9-10. Food donations can be dropped off during that time or at Citizens Bank at 711 W. Miller St.

•Also at Perkins School, 23 area families received generous donations in the formof presents for children, winter clothing like coats, hats, boots and snow pants food, blankets and grocery store gift cards.
This phenomenal effort was organized by Perkins Social Worker Chelsea Shaw who received donations from:
• The Newark Fire Department, that donated 4 boxes of brand new toys
• Perkins School staff and their families who donated toys, clothes, basic essentials and gift cards totaling over $3000
• Newark community members who were able to sponsor two families Shaw thanked everyone that contributed to this amazing effort this year. “The generosity was beyond my wildest dreams . . .”
