As part of the week’s activities, Newark Rotary Club graciously sponsored Scanlon’s visit and book talks with Perkins and Lincoln School students May 7th and with Kelley School students the day before.
Books she talked about were:
· UPK & K: “I Want a Boat” with a 30-minute presentation for UPK and K classes
· 1st and 2nd grade: “I Want a Boat” and “Full Moon Pups” with a 45-minute presentation for 1st and 2nd grade classes
Scanlon is the author of nearly 30 books and has visited more than 100 schools throughout her career. Using standards-aligned, interactive presentations, she offers students a tangible connection to the books they read, and a glimpse into the process and profession of writing. Her visits foster a life-long love of reading, and inspire creativity, confidence, and commitment to the written word, no matter the age of the audience.
“This opportunity was provided by the Newark Rotary's local district grant which was very exciting,” Perkins Reading teacher Danielle Watt said “The Rotary Club also purchased several of the author’s books and donated them to our school library. The author even signed them for us which was even more amazing for us!
As far as other Perkins Reading Week highlights, Watt said there was a daily themed dress up schedule and the Scholastic Book Fair.
“Students had the opportunity to shop during their scheduled library time as well as on reading night May 7th,” she said. “We wrapped up the week with each student receiving a book that was purchased through a donation from the Perkins PTA and students were thrilled to get their own book to take home.”
Watt said the annual Reading Night May 7th also afforded students and their families the opportunity to:
• Shop at the Scholastic Book Fair
· Stop by the cafeteria for pizza, water, and cookies for dessert. Domino’s in Newark graciously donated the pizzas and Wegmans donated a gift card which allowed for the purchase of water and cookies for students and families
· Visit a nautical-themed station outside of the cafeteria and library and enjoy:
o Creating sailboats using pool noodles, craft sticks or straws, and a red, white, and blue sails

· Win one of several raffle prizes including:
