With help from Katie Broach’s pottery students at Newark High School May 27th, VerMeersch’s students carved clay hearts out of flattened pieces of clay. Some also embedded loving expressions into them.
Broach’s students later kiln fired the hearts and on May 5th, back in VerMeersch’s Lincoln School classroom, the clay creations were hydro dipped in soft pastel-colored liquids of each pupil’s choosing.
Additionally, Broach and some of her students helped the second graders decorate canvas bags with acrylic paints that they will put the hearts in for their moms and fashioned colorful Mother’s Day cards.
"Our second graders had a wonderful experience with high school students in the pottery room to create special hearts for Mother’s Day,” VerMeersch said. “They were safe, respectful, and responsible throughout the lesson, followed directions carefully, and created beautiful pieces they could be proud of. We love seeing our students learn, collaborate, and shine!"
Broach’s students have collaborated several times in recent years with Lincoln second grade classes and made holiday-related gift items. Broach contends younger students learning from older ones is truly invaluable for both groups.
