Kim Howell, Newark High School Community Schools Coordinator who oversees the food pantry at NHS, said the food distributed Feb. 11th in advance of the upcoming break was provided by a $2,000 Reliant Credit Union grant to help alleviate hunger when students are not in school.
Reliant is one the community partners that provides support for the food pantry.
Food distributed included two pounds of ground beef, fruits, vegetables, cheese, milk, eggs, canned tuna, cereal, pancake mix and brownie mix. The food was obtained from Headwater Food Hub in Ontario that provides food from regional family farms and businesses.
Howell said the food was distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the Alex Eligh Community Center from 3 to 5 p.m. and no prior sign up was required.
A similar food distribution will be held March 25th at the AECC from 3 to 5 p.m. in advance of the March 30th through April 3rd Spring recess, again to make sure students have food when they are not in school.
Amanda DeSain and Camerin O’Brien, Newark Reliant branch representatives visited the distribution site at the AECC Feb. 11th.
Lara Duckett-Scoville and Jessie Gile from Finger Lakes Community Action were also on hand to set up future need assessment screening with those who received food that include temporary housing supports, food and nutrition assistance, transportation and more.
