Despite the snow and chilling 29-degree temperature, the musicians who performed inside the bandstand, were directed by NHS Instrumental Music teacher Robert Humphrey. They played “Stars and Stripes Forever” before the brief ceremony began and the national anthem after the opening prayer.

The ceremony in the park followed a parade that featured Newark Fire Department and Newark Police Department vehicles, nine members of the Newark VFW Post 2883 and three members of the Newark American Legion August Mauer Post 286, members of Newark Boy Scout Troops 122 and 138 and others.

At precisely 11 a.m., Newark FD members blew the horns in their vehicles for 1 minute.

Veterans Day is celebrated at 11 a.m. on November 11th each year because it marks the anniversary of the end of World War I, which occurred on "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" in 1918. The official holiday, initially called Armistice Day, commemorates the moment an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was signed between the Allied nations and Germany.

Both VFW Commander Tim Sheehe and American Legion Commander Dana Jean Deppen said more individuals from both of their organizations, would have liked to participate, but for various reasons, including the weather, were unable to.

VFW member Dennis Tellier, who is President of the Newark Veterans Council, was the Master of Ceremonies at the service.

Newark American Legion Commander Deppen was the guest speaker at the ceremony and American Legion Chaplin Steve Kuhn did the opening and closing prayer.
