Sherman, the son of Heather Brocklebank and Matthew Sherman, performed a Level 6 All-State bass solo, “Whither Must I Wander” by Ralph Vaughn Williams at the NYSSMA solo festival at the Gates-Chili High School in May.
He was one of 6,500 sophomore and junior instrumental and vocal musicians from across the state who participated in All-State solo evaluations in the Spring in hopes of being one of 600 vocal and instrumental musicians selected to participate in the NYSSMA Conference All-State various performance groups.
Sherman recently received a letter in the mail informing him he had been selected to participate in NYSSMA’s Conference All-State.
“We are thrilled to have Braydan representing Newark at the NYSSMA Conference All-State,’ said Kate Flock, vocal music teacher at NHS. “His dedication and musical talent have earned him this prestigious opportunity, and we know he will thrive among fellow accomplished musicians and under the guidance of a master conductor. Braydan is truly a bright spot in the Newark Reds family, and we are so proud of him!”
“I am very thankful for the fact that I get to have this experience,”said Sherman, who will be performing at Conference All-State with the Mixed Choir in December. “I am thrilled to learn more throughout the process and perform with teenagers across the state. I especially thank my family for supporting me in all of my musical activity and Mrs. Flock for preparing the solo which got me the perfect score, allowing me to have this opportunity.”
Sherman is a member of the NHS Chamber Choir and Vocal Jazz directed by Flock and plays trumpet as a member of the Wind Ensemble, Fusion and Jazz Band, directed by NHS instrumental music teacher Robert Humphrey.
Also in high school, he has consistently been in Newark Drama Club’s musical and dramatic productions and will portray Matthew Cuthbert in “Anne of Green Gables” in October.
