Perkins, Lincoln schools provided welcoming activities before schools open September 4th

Some of the youngest learners at Perkins and Lincoln Schools and their families were recently warmly welcomed to the upcoming school year through two special traditions _ Perkins Elementary’s third annual “Popsicles with the Principals” and Lincoln Elementary’s “Kindergarten Porch Visits.”

Both events highlighted Newark Central School District’s commitment to building strong connections between students, families, and staff from the very start of the school year.

At Perkins, families of students in UPK through Grade 2 gathered August 27th on the playground to enjoy popsicles and frozen treats while music played and children laughed, played and reconnected with classmates.

Principal Pete Czerkas shared this year marked the best turnout yet for the event, while Assistant Principal Stephanie Martin noted it was a wonderful way to meet Perkins families and incoming students in a relaxed and fun setting.

Both Czerkas and Martin reflected on how the simple joy of play helps children—and families—build natural connections.

Meanwhile, Lincoln’s Kindergarten teachers and administrators visited over 45 homes Aug. 25th and 26th to personally welcome incoming Kindergarten students.

Each child received a welcome postcard and a packet of “jitter glitter” to place under their pillow at bedtime September 3rd, the night before school begins Sept. 4th, to help ease any first-day nerves.

Kindergarten teacher Jasmine Bueso explained, “We like being able to connect with students before the school year. It helps us build positive relationships with both families and students.”

Principal Kari Hamelinck added, “The annual porch visits are a great way to get in the community for students and families to have a familiar face before starting school.”

Both schools will host a Meet and Greet for all UPK-2 families to visit classrooms, connect with teachers, and prepare for the first day of school.

Perkins families are invited on Sept. 3 from 3:45–4:45 p.m., while Lincoln families are welcomed on the same day from 3:30–4:30 p.m..
