Paul Liess Jr., who has been School Business Administrator in the York Central School District in Retsof, New York since March 2019 and has an extensive business background, was appointed the new Assistant Superintendent for Business, effective June 23rd, by the Newark Board of Education May 21st.

He is filling the vacancy created by the July 31st, 2024, retirement of Assistant Superintendent for Business Ed Gnau. Greg Kern has served as Interim Assistant Superintendent for Business since then.
“I’m very excited and enthusiastic about coming to work in the Newark Central School District,” Liess said. “I am looking forward to working with the administrative team and working to support students, teachers and other staff and the entire NCSD school district community.”
“Paul brings extensive knowledge from both the private and public sectors,” Superintendent Susan Hasenauer said. “The fact that he holds both an MBA as well as a School District Business Leadership Certificate is appealing alongside his experience as a Business Administrator in the York Central School District. I have no doubt he will hit the ground running and ensure we continue along a path of fiscal responsibility. Additionally, he will oversee the following departments: Buildings and Grounds, Food Service and Transportation.”
Prior to working in York Central School District Liess was:
• Director of Finance and Business Services for the Monroe County Water Authority from August through November of 2018.
• Director of Accounting/Business Manager for the Town of Ontario from September 2010 until October of 2018.
• Director of Finance/Personnel for the Town of Henrietta from February 2002 until June 2010
Other related business positions Liess has held have included his being:
• Budget Officer/Accountant for the Town of Wheatland from 2022 -2024
• Finance Manager of FP&A, Global Crossing in Rochester from 2000-2001
• Financial Analyst for Electronic Data Systems in Rochester from 1998-2000
• Revenue Manager & Financial Analyst for Citicorp Student Loan Division in Rochester from 1995-1998.
Liess earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting and marketing at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania; his Master of Business Administration degree from St. Bonaventure University; and his School District Business Leadership Certificate from SUNY Brockport.
He currently resides in Churchville and plans to relocate to Wayne County soon. He is the single father
of an adult daughter Tori who is a registered nurse in Boston, MA.
