The week’s events included a safety presentation to the more than 400 NMS students in their physical education classes.
Newark Central School District School Resource Officer and Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Nick Fera, Tyler Turner, a Patriot Protection security guard at NMS and an Ontario County Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to the Ontario County Bike Patrol and the NMS PE staff worked collaboratively on the presentations that emphasized the importance of bike maintenance, following the rules of the road and wearing a helmet to prevent head injury.
The week culminated in a two-hour Bike Rodeo May 10th, funded in part by a 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) Grant. The rodeo was coordinated by NCSD Director of Innovation and Grant Services Jennifer Sinsebox and the NMS Behavioral Health Team.
School Psychologist Rebecca Battle and member of the NMS Behavioral Health team said the Bike Rodeo was also supported by Trek Bicycle Geneva that provided bicycle safety inspections and tune ups at no cost.
Wayne County Public Health provided new bike helmets to anyone in need.
Turner created a bike skills course in the school’s parking lot for students to test their bike control.
The event concluded in a group ride down around the Woodlane Community Church and back.
Thomas Shoemaker, a NMS 7th grader that participated in the Bike Rodeo said: “This is a great way to get out of the house doing something fun.”
