The joy of reading was made extra special at Perkins and Lincoln Schools recently as students got to participate in lots of great weeklong activities April 28th through May 2nd including Reading Nights featuring all kinds of fun things for families to do.

Perkins School’s activities during Reading Week were built around a camping theme and one of the big highlights of the week was the “It Flies, It Creeps, It Crawls” presentation April 28th by the Farmington wildlife education program “Wildlife Rockstars’ during which students met and learned about various animals brought to the school.
Lincoln School’s Reading Week activities were fashioned around its “Readers in Bloom” theme and one of the big highlights there was the celebrity guest reader Terry Clifford of 92.5 WBEE radio fame who read stories to students and families in the school foyer during Reading Night April 29th.
Each school also invited school and community leaders to read to youngsters throughout the week.
What’s more, more than three dozen Newark High School students earned Capstone community service credit hours by not only reading to students in both schools, but also some even helped at Perkins School’s Scholastic Book Fair, NHS English teacher and Capstone Coordinator Katie Ganter said.
Another highlight at Perkins School were the masked mystery readers _ Kindergarten special education teacher Kelley Stephan, first grade teacher Jillian Blodgett and music teacher Brittany Mechler, who read to students on videos during the week and whose identities were revealed at the culminating assembly May 2nd.
Each day at both schools, students were encouraged to and enjoyed dressing according to a specific theme.
At Perkins School second grader Lilly Howard was the winner of the bookmark contest with first grader Regan Groover and second grader Keinelie Gutierrez Sanabria receiving honorable mention.
The school’s PTA provided every student at Perkins with a camping-themed book.
Perkins Reading teacher Danielle Watt who spearheaded Reading Week events at the school with Reading teacher Meaghan Trevvett gratefully noted gift card donations from area businesses including Wegmans, Walmart, Canal View Family Restaurant, Tom Wahl’s, McDonalds and gave a “huge shout out” to Domino’s Pizza in Newark donated 40 pizzas for families to enjoy at Reading Night.
