Her appointment to the new position, created in March by the Board of Education, was approved by the BOE at its April 23rd meeting. Solan will complete her one-year administrative internship in the District’s Innovation and Grants Department and at Perkins School June 30th.
As Director of Family and Community Engagement, Solan, who served as NCSD’s UPK-12 Family Outreach & Community Schools Coordinator from July 2017 until last August before her internship this school year, will lead District-wide efforts to strengthen family and community partnerships.
She will work to ensure staff and families have the resources, training and information needed to support student success and safety. She will also coordinate and implement a District-wide Parent Advisory Council, continue the implementation of a Community Schools’ model, oversee grant services and continue to oversee the NCSD Threat Assessment Process.
“Julia is the most natural fit for this position,” said Superintendent Susan Hasenauer. “She has demonstrated her commitment to the community through her work as the District’s Social Worker and has earned the respect of her colleagues, students, and families in the region. What I am most excited about is the distinct focus she will have on creating mentorships for our students with local businesses. This is something we have been trying to build but have not yet accomplished at the level I would hope for our district. This will be one of her main tasks and why we have shifted an existing position to one that specifically looks at building relationships in the community to help better serve our children as they look to build their futures and post-secondary goals. I look forward to watching Julia lead and continue to support our families and community in partnership.”
“I'm incredibly excited and honored to continue to work with Newark students, families, and community members as the new Director of Family and Community Engagement,” Solan said. “Having spent my entire career here at Newark, I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving a community that means so much to me. I look forward to building strong partnerships and creating meaningful opportunities that will empower our students, family, and overall school and community to thrive.”
Prior to this school year, Solan also served as the Newark-Lyons Middle School Cooperative Summer School Principal from May 2024 through last August.
She received her bachelor of the arts degree in sociology from St. Bonaventure University, her master's in social work from Keuka College and will be receiving her School District and Building Leader certificate from SUNY Oswego this summer.
Solan lives in Victor with her husband Mark, an 8th grade social studies teacher in Seneca Falls and their pets Hank, Bonnie, and Tilly.
