“I am very excited and looking forward to working with the students and staff in Newark! I know the district is building an excellent team with high standards, I am extremely eager to work in an environment like that,” he said enthusiastically.

In addition to his administrative duties in the WCSD since 2022, Mutch has been teaching 15 sections of elementary music classes each week, in addition to being the director of the third, fourth, fifth, seventh and eight grade choirs.

“I’ve been verrry busy,” he said.

Looking ahead to Newark, Mutch said: “I’m looking forward to helping the students and staff at Perkins and Lincoln Schools achieve their goals. I'm excited to learn how I can best contribute to the success of both schools."

“Ian’s background brings a unique skill set to our administrative team. His previous experience as a Director of Fine Arts and an accomplished musician will help support the buildings though the lens of performance,” said Superintendent Susan Hasenauer. “He is used to promoting, supporting and having high expectations for large groups of students. This job will be no different and I am looking forward to seeing how he incorporates the arts into his leadership style with both students and teachers. I am confident he will draw upon our strengths and further build collaboration within both school communities. We can’t wait for him to get started!”

Prior to working at Wayne Elementary School, Mutch was the Director of Fine Arts from 2010-2017 at the Charter School for Applied Technologies in Buffalo. Before that he taught music in Rochester City Schools for two years.

Mutch earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia; his Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from SUNY Buffalo and in May will receive his Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from SUNY Brockport.

He lives in Penfield with wife Rachel, a second grade teacher at Council Rock Primary School in Brighton. The couple have two children in college and another is a high school senior.
