Newark Drama Club’s rehearsals are underway for the March presentation of the musical “The Pajama Game.”

Set in 1954, “The Pajama Game” tells the story of conditions at the Cedar Rapids, Iowa Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory where it’s anything but peaceful as romance _ and sparks _ fly between new superintendent, Sid Sorokin, and Babe Williams, leader of the union grievance committee. Their stormy relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7 ½ cent pay increase. It is a classic romantic musical comedy featuring songs like “Steam Heat” and “Hernando’s Hideaway.” “The Pajama Game has been on my “someday” list for many years,” said Director Emily Howard who also is an NHS English 11 teacher. “We were waiting for the right mix of actors. The featured roles require our actors to delve into character development and create believable relationships on stage. Our ensemble also gets the opportunity to create individual characters. We get to tackle some fun dancing, including the tango. We are excited to present this classic piece of musical theatre to our community.”

Crew members include: Brook Arnold, Gracie Bennett, Evelyn Berndt, Tohbi Edmister, Raina George, Alexa Gravino, Loretta Hobart, Courtney Jadus, Giovanni Modaffari, Emma Newark and Armoni Sanders.
As in the past, Howard is choreographing the show. NHS Vocal Music teacher Kate Flock is the musical director, Mary Lou Bonnell is the accompanist, Newark Middle School Instrumental Music teacher Rebekah Valerio will be the Pit Band director and Dave Howard is the Set Designer.
The show will be presented in the NHS Auditorium March 1st and 2nd at 7 p.m. and at 2 p.m. March 3rd.
