Newark High School Community Service Volunteers

More than 30 Newark High School students helped raise $1,240.28 during four, bell ringing sessions at Newark Walmart’s Home and Grocery entrances December 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th as part of their Red Kettle/Salvation Army Bell Ringing Community Service days.

"Students had a great time greeting customers and wishing them ‘Merry Christmas’ and ‘Happy Holidays.’ Some of the students had so much holiday spirit that they played music, danced, and sang as they rang their bells. It's great to see our students volunteering in the community and having a great time while they are doing it,” said NHS English teacher Katie Ganter, who is the NHS Capstone Coordinator along with Co-Coordinator Danielle Ohlson, who also teaches English and Multicultural Studies.

The NHS Capstone Project is comprised of several required components in order to graduate. One of them is that each senior must have completed 20 volunteer community service hours.

When asked about his bell-ringing experience, NHS senior Luis Austin said he enjoyed volunteering, adding "community and celebration, that's what Newark is made of."

Rotary Foreign exchange student from Mexico, Luis Alonso Barbosa, also an NHS senior, stated "It was a nice, cold, and fun way to help the community."

“Danielle Ohlson and I organized the student sign ups and served as chaperones for the students. Kim Howell, our Community Schools Coordinator was the "Kettle Keeper" for this activity,” Ganter said.
