Newark High School has announced its Class of 2023 Valedictorian and Salutatorian.

Sara George, whose current grade point average (GPA) is 99.34 and is the daughter of Korrine George and the late Russell George is Valedictorian.

Anna Verdine, whose GPA is 98.48 and is the daughter of Patricia Verdine and the late Gary Verdine, is the Salutatorian.

George plans to attend Monroe Community College in the fall where she will major in dental hygiene and then work towards her license in dental anesthesiology.

Verdine plans to attend Le Moyne College in the fall on an academic and athletic scholarship where she will major in biology as part of a Pre-Veterinary track. She will also be on their Division 1 track and field team.

While at NHS, George has served as the Senior Class secretary and has been a member of Student Council. She is a percussionist in the Wind Ensemble and also has participated in chorus, musicals and Drama Club. George is an active member in Link Crew and on the Board of Directors for Interact Club. She has most notably been involved in the Unified Sports Programs of basketball, bowling and bocce ball where she has worked as a mentor and advocate of inclusion.

Verdine, who is Student Council Vice President, is a percussionist in Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Fusion, and Pit band for the musical, has also been very active in soccer, basketball, lacrosse and indoor and outdoor track and field while at NHS. She has also been a member of Link Crew.

In terms of honors and awards, both George and Verdine are members of NHS’ Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Although George has been recognized for several awards and scholarships for her leadership, citizenship, character, community service and academic excellence, she has found that her contributions to the Special Olympics programs are her most rewarding achievement.

Verdine is French Honor Society President. She was the 2022 recipient of the Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding Youth Award. She has also received numerous sports-related and community service awards. She won the American Chemistry Achievement Award in 2022 and this year she was the recipient of the Donald K. Rhine scholarship, the Sharon Marie All Memorial Scholarship and many other athletic awards. She was a member of the All-County Band in 11th and 12th grade and has received a Superior Rating in the Gold Cup Piano Festival in 2022.

Outside of NHS, Verdine has been a Kitz Youth Soccer Coach from 2019 until present and is currently a counselor at Camp Good Days and Special Times. George has been employed at The Apple Shed for the last two seasons.
