Creative messaging highlighted nhs red ribbon week

Red Ribbon Week, an annual event held each October in schools across the U.S., that raises awareness about making healthy, drug-free choices among kids and teens, was celebrated at Newark High School October 20th-24th with themed spirit days, fun activities, and educational events for students and staff.

“The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to promote a united, visible commitment to living drug-free. This year’s national theme was “Life Is a Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free.” To make this year’s celebration extra special, NHS filled the week with engaging and meaningful events for everyone to enjoy,” said NHS Prevention Counselor Debra Mohat.

Spirit Week Themes:

Oct. 20 - Wear Red Day

Oct. 21 - “Follow Your Dreams and Stay Drug Free” (Pajama/Comfy Clothes Day)

Oct. 22 - “In My Drug-Free Era” (Dress from Your Favorite Decade)

Oct. 23 - “Lei Off Drugs” (Tropical Day)

Oct. 24 - “Team Up Against Drugs” (Favorite Sports Team Day)

In addition to dressing up, students took part in special activities throughout the week.

“The Council on Alcoholism and Addictions of the Finger Lakes hosted a Red Ribbon-themed trivia booth with prizes on October 20 and 21,” Mohat said. “On October 24, the Wayne Behavioral Health Network ran an interactive booth where students could see realistic models and images to learn about the harmful effects of substances like alcohol and THC on the body.”

NHS also held its annual Pride Class Door Decorating Contest, where classes created fun and creative displays promoting a drug-free lifestyle.”

This year’s winners were:

1st Place: Kimberly Sutter’s Pride Class - “Hocus Pocus, Drugs Aren’t Our Focus”

2nd Place: Michael Baronich’s Pride Class - “My Spidey Sense is Drug-Free”

3rd Place: Jason Breau’s Pride Class - “Team Up Against Drugs”

Honorable Mention: Gianna Gentile’s Pride Class – “Life Is a Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free”

Students in the winning classes were treated to breakfast goodies as a reward for their creativity and effort.

“NHS is proud of everyone who participated in making this Red Ribbon Week a fun, educational, and memorable celebration of living healthy and drug-free.,” Mohat said.
