Hasseler received the award at a reception March 7th at the WFL BOCES Conference Center in Newark she attended with her parents Tanya and Steve Hasseler, Newark High School Principal Kelly A. Zielke and Superintendent Susan Hasenauer.

Zielke and Hasenauer nominated Hasseler for the award. In order to qualify for the award, recipients needed to:

  • Have a GPA of 80 or higher at the end of their junior year.

  • Demonstrate qualities and characteristics expected of someone in a leadership role including honesty, compassion, perseverance, responsibility, kindness, resiliency and industriousness.

  • Consistently place others' needs before their own as exemplified by their service to school, family, community or others.

At NHS, Hasseler has been: Student Council treasurer during her junior and senior years; was class president during her freshman and sophomore years; is a member of Interact Club and its Board of Directors; and has been a football cheerleader for 4 years and a basketball cheerleader for 3 years. Outside of school, she is President of Primetime 585 Youth Council; has been a Blessings In A Backpack volunteer for several years; and works as a pharmacy technician at Walgreens in Newark.

Hasseler, who wants to become a pediatric surgeon and has not yet decided on which college she will attend, will begin pre-med studies this fall.

“Robert Greenleaf once said, ‘Good leaders must first become good servants,’ and Sophia emulates this through her connections and leadership roles both in and outside the school community,” Hasenauer said. “Each one of her accomplishments starts with her decision to try and her actions and tenacity are inspiring to others. I have no doubt she will be successful as she works to accomplish her dreams both in life and her career. She, without a doubt, represents the qualities encompassed in this award. “

“I was so pleased to support the Superintendent’s choice to nominate Sophia for this award. She has worked hard, in and out of the classroom, and demonstrates leadership and character. I am looking forward to what her future holds,” Zielke said.

Hasseler is pleased about the award.

“I am grateful Ms. Hasenauer and Ms. Zielke picked me to receive this award and for what they’ve done to help me in high school in the time I’ve known them,” she said.
