The four-hour, relaxing afternoon event at which great instrumental and vocal musical selections were provided by Newark High School musicians that perform with FUSION, Vocal Jazz, Jazz Band, a Sax Quartet, small vocal groups as well as the Newark Middle School Jazz Band was a big hit with the audience that filled a good portion of the park for most of the afternoon.
Musicians performed in the iconic bandstand as family, friends and community members sat and listened while standing or seated on benches and lawn chairs.
The Country Luxe Ice Cream truck on hand this year was also a big hit.
Robert Humphrey, NHS Instrumental music teacher said the park was mostly full during the music makers event that ran from 1 to 5 p.m.
He said he heard comments from audience members like:
• "This is my favorite thing you guys do all year.”
• "I am so glad you brought FUSION to Newark."
• “The Ice Cream is delicious!”
• "Our kids are so great!"
“Our Block Party was such a fun way to wrap up the year, bringing together Middle School Jazz Band, Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz, Fusion, featured soloists and small groups,” said Kate Flock, Vocal Music teacher at NHS. “It was great to see everyone share their work and just enjoy making music together. Adding the Middle School Jazz Band this year and the Country Luxe Ice Cream truck made it even better! We’re excited to see this event keep growing and becoming an even bigger tradition in the years ahead.”
