Newark Rotarians sponsored author's visits to Kelley, Perkins and Lincoln Schools

Newark Rotarians not only sponsored popular and award-winning children’s books author Liz Garton Scanlon’s visit and book talks with all the children at Kelley, Lincoln and Perkins schools May 6 and 7th, but also purchased more than 30 of her books for the school’s libraries.

Julia Solan, Director of Family and Community Engagement for the Newark Central School District worked with Newark Rotary to facilitate Scanlon’s visits to the schools and their purchase of her books for the school’s libraries.

“We have been working with Liz Garton Scanlon and the Newark Rotary for almost one year to provide a meaningful and enriching experience for our students in grades UPK–5,” Solan said. “Having Liz visit our buildings during Reading Week was, in her own words, “the sweet” part, referencing the sweet and sour themes from her Bibsy Cross series.

“Students across all grade levels were highly engaged, asked thoughtful and meaningful questions about her writing process, and genuinely enjoyed the opportunity to meet and learn from an accomplished author,” she continued. “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Newark Rotary for organizing this opportunity, especially Lucina Hallagan, and for generously donating copies of Liz’s books to the libraries at Kelley, Lincoln, and Perkins schools. This ensures our students can continue to enjoy and access her work well beyond her visit. We truly look forward to partnering again to provide this experience in the future.”
