During Newark Central School District’s Data Chat Week October 16-20th, grades K-8 students and staff at four schools had a surprise and very welcome visitor.

Plory, iReady’s alien mascot, visited Newark Middle, Lincoln, Perkins, and Kelley Schools to celebrate the accomplishments of the students on their hard work in taking their fall iReady Reading and Mathematics Diagnostic Assessments.
Dr. Jennifer Sinsebox, NCSD’s Assistant Director of Innovation and Grant Services, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Coordinator and ESD/ 21 Century Community Learning Center Project Director, arranged for Plory’s visit to support the iReady Reading and Math Diagnostic Assessments with Curriculum Associates Educational Consultant Jeff Lipinczyk.
iReady is Curriculum Associates online learning platform for K-8 students that provides a benchmark on students’ reading and math skill level. Diagnostic Assessments are given in the fall, winter, and spring. The fall iReady Reading and Math Assessments were taken September 18 through Oct. 10th for Grades 1-8 and Oct. 1 through Oct. 27th for Kindergarten pupils.
“Plory supported the Data Chats for grades 1-8 and spread encouragement for our Kindergarteners,’’ Dr. Sinsebox said.
She noted that after the Assessments, “teachers engage in data dives to analyze the student results looking for strengths, patterns, and trends. Targeted Instruction is created for WIN Time-What I Need. Teachers differentiate instruction to target skills students have not yet mastered.
“Additionally, iReady provides personalized lessons depending on the students’ performance on the diagnostic results. Teachers take part in data chats with students to identify the areas of strength, as well as areas of improvement. Thereafter, students begin to understand their role as a learner and begin to reflect and set goals as they journey through their ELA and Math classes. The iReady Diagnostic results are also shared with families to inform them on their children’s progress as well as next steps towards success. Besides her visitation to Newark, the iReady mascot has been making her rounds across the region.
“Plory was impressed at how committed the district is to the use of data to inform targeted instruction to make sure students are getting the academic support they need moving forward.” Dr. Sinsebox said.
