    What happens next?!?!?

    1.  Pick up your script

    2.  Pick up a director or stage manager checklist (if you have one of these roles)

    3.  Get together on your own time with your scenes to rehearse and memorize before Saturday May 20

    4.  Be ready to tech and run the show on Saturday May 20! Pick up the schedule!

    Director Checklist

Check, Please will be performed on the high school auditorium stage “in one” (downstage of the black traveler). The stage will consist of two scenes, pre-set. Each has a cocktail table and two chairs. If your scene requires props or other basic set pieces those may be added. Work with your stage manager to find any items you need. You may use anything in the grotto.

We will set up a prop table on both sides of the stage for your actors to access.

Lights will be set to just come up on one side of the stage at a time so that it reduces time between scenes. If your artistic vision requires other light cues, work with your stage manager to note where/what the cue is and you can program that into the board on May 20 at your tech rehearsal.

Costumes are the director’s vision. You may use anything in the grotto. Please do not make your actors purchase anything specific for this show. This play is set in present time.

When you plan your blocking assume that you will have from center stage to either stage right or stage left as your acting space (and upstage of the black traveler).

The stage will be pre-set like this:

    How to block:

    ·       Read your scene several times.

    ·       Mark up “beats” where there is a change of intention for an actor (What do the characters want in the scene? How do they change their tactics or intentions to get what they want in the scene?). The beats will help you see where movement might happen naturally.

    ·       Some people like to “pre-block” scenes and some people like to work with their actors to figure out what works best for the characters. I suggest a combination of these two things. Before you have a rehearsal with the actors, be prepared with a vision for WHO these characters are in the scene, and what they want. Then, work with the actors to develop these characters in their own voices. Let the actor help lead when they feel motivated by something in the scene.

    ·       At your rehearsal with the actors it is helpful to first read the scene out loud without blocking. You could do this several times. Then, you can start to block using the table and chairs (and any other props you may need-work with your stage manager to have rehearsal props ready).

    ·       Try the scene many different ways. You are the actor’s eyes and ears. Help lead them to finding the funny moments. Directors help with pacing and timing of the scenes and landing the jokes. Don’t be afraid to try stuff until it sounds right!

    ·       Be patient, kind, and not critical.

    Stage Manager Checklist

The stage will be pre-set like this:

Your scene will either be on Stage Left or Stage Right (see scene breakdown).

Stage Manager’s first responsibility is organizing the rehearsals. Collect contact information from your director and actors. Schedule rehearsal times and locations to accommodate everyone.

Before the rehearsal, meet with the director to determine if any rehearsal props or set pieces are needed. (cocktail tables are in the wings, use the black band chairs for chairs).

During rehearsal, write down blocking and any other moments the actors (or director!) may need help remembering.

Make note of any lighting or sound cues needed in the scene.

In your meeting with the director or rehearsal with the actors, help actors locate any costume needs from grotto.

On May 20, be prepared to set any light cues in the light board (don’t worry, I will be there to help!).

    Be organized and calm!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE arrive on May 20 rehearsed and MEMORIZED!

(a series of 13 scenes of bad dates)

    Actors, Directors, Stage Managers needed!

NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NEEDED! This is a great way to get involved with Drama Club!

This will be a mostly student run production. Students will serve as actors (1 M, 1 F per scene), directors (1 per scene), and stage managers (1 per scene). I will be the Producer and also oversee pieces of the project.

There will be a meeting AFTER spring break (late April) to distribute scenes THEN…

    ·     I will hold two mini workshops (think 20 minutes after school one day!) - one for interested Directors and one for interested Stage Managers.

    ·     After the workshops, it will be scene group’s responsibility to set up rehearsals. These are on your own time.

You can (and likely WILL) have more than one job in more than one scene.

On Saturday May 20, we will all meet as a group at 9:00AM. The morning will be used for tech rehearsals for each scene. We’ll break for lunch (bring a packed lunch!). Run and rehearse in the afternoon. Break for dinner (pizza provided by the Drama Club). AND THEN, at 7:00pm friends and family are invited to our performance!

The event will be open to the public and free. We’ll set up a donation box to help support the Drama Club.
