Good Afternoon Newark CDS families and staff,
Two weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic and there are things that are going very well and things I remained concerned about. One thing is certain, Newark is an amazing community and this difficult time has brought out the best in so many. My heart remains full.
Yet, there are too many of our scholars that we have not made solid contact with as of this writing. If you know of a student that has not checked email, Schoology or Seesaw to connect with their teachers, please have them do so. We are using all the communication tools we have to make sure everyone is doing okay.
Education remains important – but I’m more concerned about the wellbeing of our children, families and staff. The longer this building closure continues, we will have to work together to get meaningful academic work to and from our scholars, while supporting everyone through this stressful situation. More to come on this from your buildings and teachers next week.
Here are a few important items to be aware of:
The latest Governor’s Executive Order, which was just issued today, closes school until 4/15/2020. Given that the forecast of the apex of the Coronavirus will happen during that week, it is very possible that this will get extended again. As soon as I know more, I will communicate more.
There is still no information about Regents exams or graduation.
Our food service team and transportation department continue to do a fantastic job of getting meals out to families. In an effort to minimize personal contact and increase social distancing, the meal service schedule will change effective Monday, March 30th. The district will serve multiple meals at a time, but on fewer days of the week. Beginning 3/30/20, meal service will occur on Monday and Wednesday only as follows:
o Monday 3/30/20: 2 lunches and 2 breakfasts per student
o Tuesday 3/31/20: No meal service
o Wednesday 4/1/2020: 3 lunches and 3 breakfasts per student
o Thursday 4/2/20: No meal service
o Friday 4/3/20: No meal service
One last reminder that it remains important that we all support as many local businesses as possible during this difficult time. So many of our business are a great support to the school district. Please practice social distancing while supporting local businesses.
Thanks again for all you have done and all you will continue to do to support each other.
Matt Cook, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools
